What is AdBlue?

AdBlue, also known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (or DEF), is a diesel fuel additive. AdBlue is the registered trademark for AUS32, or Aqueous Urea Solutions, a water-based solution added to diesel engines, made from a precise blend of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionised water.

What does AdBlue do?

AdBlue’s role is to reduce the harmful nitrogen oxide emissions produced by diesel engines. In fact, AdBlue® has been shown to reduce these emissions by up to 90 percent.

As exhaust gases pass from the diesel particulate filter into the catalytic converter, AdBlue is sprayed into the system. The ammonia in the exhaust gases reacts with the urea in the AdBlue, converting it to harmless nitrogen and water vapour. In addition to the emissions benefits, AdBlue has been shown to improve fuel consumption by 2-6%.

What is AdBlue made from?

AdBlue is a precise blend of urea and deionised water. Urea is a compound of nitrogen that turns to ammonia when heated. It is used in many industries, including as a fertilizer in agriculture.

Despite common wisdom, AdBlue is not made from pig's urine. Whilst both liquids contain urea, the urea in AdBlue is produced synthetically.

Is all AdBlue the same?

To be called AdBlue, the composition must be 37.5% urea to 67.5% deionised water. However, there are companies who manufacture “AdBlue”, but not to the required standards. Ensure you choose a trust or reputable company that can show proof of licensing or ISO 22241 certification.

Does my car need AdBlue?

Whilst not all diesel cars need AdBlue, AdBlue is a legal requirement for any diesel engine car that’s fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). As a result, many diesel cars registered after September 2015 use AdBlue to help reduce harmful emissions. Consult your vehicle’s handbook if you’re unsure, or have a look for an AdBlue filler cap on your vehicle.

Most diesel vehicles will require an AdBlue top-up every 3,000-4,000 miles, but this will depend on the engine. The best way to be certain is to check your vehicle’s manual.

Does AdBlue go out of date?

If stored correctly, AdBlue has a shelf life of around 12 months. The urea solution is relatively stable, clear, non-toxic and safe to handle. We recommend storing AdBlue in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area that is out of direct sunlight. Signs that your AdBlue has gone off are a change of colour, change of smell or crystals appearing in the bottle.
